Schools in England

The Department for Education (DfE) provides the Schools Census File data for the Learning Records Service (LRS) to generate the Unique Learner Numbers (ULNs) for learners from the age of 13. Schools are then able to download the ULNs using the School to School (s2s) solution.

We recommend that ULNs are downloaded into the school's own MI system and that the learner is made aware of their ULN.

The DfE also provides a Qualifications File to the LRS that contains qualifications achieved in English schools; for example, GCEs, AS-levels, Diplomas. These qualifications are included in the student's Personal Learning Record (PLR) and are available to benefit learners as they progress through learning throughout their lives.

The PLR for each learner contains verified qualifications from the school, so has the potential to accelerate the application and entry process for further and/or higher education. The PLR is also key to the provision of effective careers advice.

ICT lesson plan and classroom resource

We have created an ICT lesson plan for schools, along with a classroom classroom handout resource for teachers, explaining the use of the ULN along with its long term benefits to students as they progress into college or higher education.
