Benefits to schools using the Unique Learner Number

The use of the Unique Learner Number (ULN) in schools will help reduce the amount of administration required for examinations. This is achieved with one unique number for each learner.

Schools and colleges need a way to collate Destinations information about learners once they’ve left school/college. Using the ULN, providing the learner has agreed to share their Personal Learning Record (PLR), this allows the data to be collected easily online. The PLR for each learner contains verified qualifications from the school, so has the potential to accelerate the application and entry process for further and/or higher education.

Additionally, the PLR can help the learner and careers adviser plan the next steps for a qualification. The PLR is key to the provision of effective careers advice.

Benefits to pupils using the Personal Learning Record

The Unique Learner Number and Personal Learning Record can provide support to learners when they leave school, for example:

  • Speeds up UCAS applications with their qualifications already verified
  • Simplifies access to Apprenticeships or Further Education in general
  • The National Careers Service links with the Unique Learner Number which helps to provide better guidance
  • Verified qualifications to prospective employers (the learner must agree to share this information before it can be viewed by a third-party)
